There are two main types of contraception, which work by being inserted into the uterus:

  • The Mirena intrauterine system contains progesterone hormone and acts as a contraceptive but can also be used to control bleeding or as part of hormone replacement therapy.
  • A copper intrauterine device has no hormone associated with it. At Gold Coast Women’s Health, we use the copper T device, which can be left in to provide contraception for up to 10 years. It does tend to cause periods to be slightly heavier or longer. It can also be used as an emergency contraceptive.

Worldwide intrauterine contraception is the most widely used form of contraceptive.

Mirena IUS

A Mirena IUS is a device that sits inside the uterus to provide contraception and bleeding control. It can be kept in for 5 years in most situations though it can easily be removed earlier if you no longer wish to have a Mirena. Likewise, some circumstances allow the device to be left in longer.

Mirena is a type of long acting reversible contraception. It can be used long term and is more effective than an oral contraceptive pill or condoms. There is also no risk of user error. If you decide you want to become pregnant the Mirena has no long lasting effects on fertility and it is possible to become pregnant in the cycle following Mirena removal.

Mirena is as a suitable contraceptive for:

  • Women who are breastfeeding
  • For most women who cannot use oestrogens, as it is a progestogen only method of contraception
  • Women who have not had a pregnancy
  • Women who are going through menopause (as part of HRT). In this circumstance it is used for 4 years to provide protection to the uterus from the effects of additional oestrogen.

Copper IUD

A copper IUD provides women who cannot use hormones with the option of a long acting reversible contraceptive. It is also able to be used as an emergency contraceptive.

Copper devices have been available since the 1960s and have a well proven record of contraceptive effectiveness. The copper acts as a spermicide and the device also prevents implantation.

A copper IUDs effectiveness ends immediately it is removed as a woman's hormonal cycle is unaffected by its presence.
