Pap Smear Test Broadbeach

Are you due for a pap smear? At Gold Coast Women’s Health, we provide thorough and professional Pap smear tests in Broadbeach. Did you know that up to 90% of the most common cervical cancers can be prevented by having 5 yearly cervical screening?

A Pap smear is a simple test taken to look for changes in the cervical cells, which might develop into cancer.

It is recommended that all women over the age of 18 and up to the age of 70, who have ever been sexually active undergo this test every 2 years. Screening is still recommended for all women who have had vaccination against HPV (Gardasil). In some cases it may be recommended that a pap smear is repeated earlier than 2 years. This may be to monitor very early changes, or if there has been an inadequate smear.

There are treatments available for changes in the cervical cells and if needed, your doctor will discuss and arrange referral to a gynaecologist. Our Pap smear tests in Broadbeach are a screening test rather than a diagnostic test. If you have symptoms of abnormal vaginal bleeding or vaginal discharge or pelvic pain it is important that you mention these to your doctor as you may require other tests as well. Likewise, the Pap smear is not a test for sexually transmitted infections.

If you hold a Medicare card, a Pap smear is classed as a normal consultation and does not incur an additional cost. If you are not covered by Medicare, additional costs will be charged by the laboratory processing the test.

Thin prep

The ThinPrep test is an alternative pap smear which tests the cervical cells using a different method. It is a liquid based cytology test. There is evidence to show that this test has a higher pick up rate for both low grade and high grade cervical changes.

The examination for the ThinPrep test is the same as for a conventional pap smear.

This test is not covered by Medicare and the laboratory processing the test will charge you.

The ThinPrep test can be used to look for sexually transmitted infections as well as precancerous cells.

If you have any questions regarding this test please ask us when you come for your appointment. If you would like this test to be done at the time of your pap smear just let your doctor know.
